What is Spatial-Temporal Reasoning? Born out of neuroscience research at the University of California, Irvine, MIND’s unique approach accesses the brain’s innate “spatial-temporal” reasoning ability. This ability, which lies at the core of innovative thinking and sophisticated problem-solving, allows the brain to hold visual, mental representations in short-term memory and to evolve them in both space and time, thinking multiple steps ahead. When students do math without pencil and paper or technology, it's called mental math - activating the part of the brain called spatial-temporal reasoning. Students have the ability to visual representations of math problems in their short term memory, while solving the next steps in a multi-step math problem. This brain function is the foundation of innovative thinking and sophisticated problem-solving; an essential 21st century skill that students need to develop early on. We now know that intelligence is not static - that if challenged, the brain can grow new neuro-pathways throughout one's life time. However, the brain is most elastic and open for learning in the elementary school years.
