            2013 WA Children's Choice Award

Since the start of school, students have been listening to and reading the books nominated for the 2013 WA Choice Picture Book Award. With the exception of the missing copies of Snow Dogs Journey and Can Hen's Give Milk?, we're done. It's NOW time for all students to go on line and vote for their favorite three books! The voting poll will close April 3rd and on April 4th I will call the nominating committee with QAE's results.

** For those families that would like to extend the excitement/adventure - you could make a trip to the SPL or book store this weekend and find those missing books. In our house, I wanted Madeline to have read them all before voting - but that's just the crazy librarian in me. Not required for everyone!**

Thanks for taking time to vote this weekend. Have your child stop by the library for an official "I VOTED" sticker!

Many students have a standard banner on their digital portfolio (Weebly). This is the banner I chose when the site was set up. You are invited to change the banner, add photos and text, making it personal and unique!

Below you will see one of many examples of a customized banner.

Click here to watch a short video I created showing you how simple it is to customize any banner in Weebly. I encourage you to do this with your child so they can feel ownership in their work.

          Changing a Banner in Weebly

Thank you for building excitement over your child's work and visiting their digital portfolio! Everyday, I watch many students looking at their work, likely enjoying the wonderful comments that have been made by their family members and friends. Powerful.

Need support? Please let me know!

Tomorrow is World Read Aloud Day! We are going to celebrate by reading aloud, listening to authors, or taking action in any way we can to Read It Forward  in honor of the 793 million people who cannot read.

Derek Munson, author of Enemy Pie, will be kicking off our special event with a school wide Skype in the lunchroom at 9:35.

After the kick-off students will return to their classrooms and receive a sticker that will list all their book choices and location. This sticker should be worn throughout the day.

Our visiting author, Shelly Sleeper, has agreed to an another presentation giving all students in K-4 an opportunity to listen to her latest story being read aloud. She will present to the Kindergarten and first grade classes at 1:00 and Grades 2-4 at 11:40. Shelly will be autographing copies of her book Shelby's Imagination Station.

Click here to download an order form for Shelby's Imagination Station. Please let me know if your child will be getting a copy so that I can give Shelly an idea of how many books to bring.

*****We are looking for more volunteers to be with us from 10:00-12:00 to help support students getting from one location to another - NO lost kids!

Hope to see you tomorrow!

Coming home today is the World Read Aloud Day 2013 book selections. Your child is asked to choose four books they would enjoy listening being read aloud. On March 6, students will move throughout the school going to the location where their choices are read aloud.

Click here to download the book selections. I am asking that you help build excitement for the event by sitting with your child and talking about the book being offered. This form needs to be returned back to school by Wednesday.

If you are able to volunteer on March 6 from 9:30-12:00, . We'll have lots of students looking for their next stop and may need your support!

It was great welcoming parents to the first Weebly workshop. Bringing parents on board with how our kids are showcasing their work is exciting. Sharing that Kindergartners are commenting on other student's work and watching older kids be so mindful in their comments to younger kids is something I've dreamed of for all long time.

Students really strut their stuff when they know there is an audience, especially an audience that is able to comment!

Here are some statements from participants in the last Weebly class. I am not blowing my horn, I just want all seats filled for the next two workshops. Click here to register.

"I thought the class was great! Very useful and the time just flew by. I would definitely recommend the class."

"My wife and I had a great time learning what our kids are doing, and that we could learn too!  Who knew??  Great format, handouts, addressing our specific issues..."

"Thanks for your time last night Jeffrey. I learned so much and am excited to "do Weebly" with my 1st grader. We've already explored some sites together and talked about meaningful comments. You rock!"

Have a great weekend!
