Welcome to a new school year! Here is the first library post, a little later than I like, but indeed filled with important information and a cry for support. First, To our new QAE families, welcome to a very special community! The QAE library is for everyone - before and after school and during all recesses. The library has a collection of over 10K books, over 120 series, iPads, digital cameras, and iPods - and a librarian who cares very much about the happiness of all students.
Our library website: qaelibrary.org. On the home page you can read library expectations, browse Resources, see the series available. browse books and find my blog. Thanks in advance for bookmarking the library website on your home computer for access ease. Here's the cry for support - the library needs additional volunteers as soon as possible. We have many new students, checking out lots of books therefore having many books that need to be put back on the shelf. Do you have an hour a week to be in the library? If so, please let me know. You'd be doing important work - making a difference in helping our students find those "just right" books. Let me know if you can be with us and we'll schedule time to work together to show you how the library is organized. Please forward this post to others that may be interested in being apart of the library family. We have grandparents, aunts and uncles that join us each week. It's a beautiful thing, with more benefits than I can list. Did I mention there's a espresso machine in the library? Please if you have any questions about volunteering in the library. If you're already sold, and ready to sign up (Yahoo! Yippee!), email me and I will respond with a welcome letter and our schedule for you to find the perfect time.
This is the first of many posts! Thank you for taking time to read them all. As librarian I connect with all the students each week, my blog helps continue those connections at home.

During the summer, students are invited to use all the online web resources and tools. Click here for a one page sheet that will help support you support your child in logging on. Most of the programs were used throughout the year, so students had the practice needed for login success. Even though I will be traveling all summer, I will be more than happy to support you if a password doesn't work or needs resetting.
I wish you an amazing summer filled with fun, adventure and reading! Madeline and I will be driving across the country visiting long lost family and friends. During our travels we will be listening to many great audiobooks (Harry Potter here we come!) and her daddies favorite music CDs from the 90s!

On another note - answering the question, "How are you doing?" has been difficult, because I am not quite sure. At times, I feel lost, distracted and very sad. Madeline has assured me that crying is OK and that I shouldn't hold it in or hide it from her. Andrew and I were together for 20 years, and I can't come up with the word to describe this void. It's almost like a tornado - comes without warning. What I can share is that the support we have received from this amazing community has filled our hearts with such with joy - I know we're not alone. I wish everyone trying to heal had the comfort and FOOD from such a loving group of people. The cards, letters, hugs and honks have been huge to both Madeline and myself. We feel your love, thoughts and prayers.

Proper keyboarding skills officially begins for all students when we return to school in 2015! With the launch of our new on-line keyboarding program, Typing Agent, students can begin practicing their skills from home, on a desktop computer or tablet. The research is clear that keyboarding skills that include correct posture and hand positioning are the keys to success for our young digital citizens. Typing Agent Newsletter (PDF)

I am seeing personalized Weebly banners, new designs, postings on personal blogs, stories and positive comments. If you haven't heard, your child has an electronic portfolio that showcases their writing, art, thinking and interests. For those who want to see student portfolios can click on Student Showcase from the library site which will take you to all the classrooms. Clicking on any teacher will take you to all the students in that class. Everyday, I watch students are visiting their classmates, learning about making positives comments . We discuss meaningful comments and the difference between praise and encouragement. Most days of the week students are invited to have lunch with me in the library to share on the presentation computer their new design and/or banner, or Weebly discoveries with others. New learning is contagious!
Many students have a standard background on their Weebly (digital portfolio). This is the default banner when sites were set up. Students in grades 2-5 are introduced on how to change the banner, add photos and text, making it theirs. Parents in the earlier grades are asked to do this at home with their child.
Below you will see a few examples of a customized banner. These banners have been linked. Click on them.
I created a short video, showing you how simple it is to customize a site in Weebly. I encourage you to do this with your child so they can have ownership in their work.
Logging in the Weebly Editor & Changing the Background and Design Changing a Banner in Weebly Thank you for building excitement over your child's work and visiting their digital portfolio. Everyday, I watch students looking at their work, likely enjoying wonderful comments that have been made by family members and friends. Powerful! Last week, Madeline and I sent an email to every person she thought would enjoy following her learning journey. In the message we shared her web address (madelinerqae2.weebly.com) and the password (ask your child or email me). Each story and art project has wonderful comments that inspire and excite her to create and share more. Need support? Interested in an evening parent Weebly class? Please let me know.
